Pupils with a reading age of 6+
These pupils should be considered to be non readers. They will be unable to deal with text based tasks without support
Pupils with a reading age of 7+
These pupils will have some sight vocabulary of common words and will be able to work out phonetically regular words e.g hat, run, stand etc.
These pupils will need help with compound words.
Pupils with a reading age of 8+
These pupils will probably be able to read most non subject- specific words in a sentence but will need help with subject- specific words and polysyllabic words.
Pupils with a reading of 9+
These pupils may still make mistakes and be hesitant with reading substantial sections of text. They may be worried about reading aloud, so it is important that the teacher dose not insist they do so.
Pupils with a reading age of 10+
These pupils should be able to read competently and will improve autonomously given reading habits.
